              canvas image

              paintOverNonBackgroundVoxels  = 0 -> leave the canvas voxel as is.  paintOverNonBackgroundVoxels =
              1 -> replace canvas voxel value with painting image voxel value paintOverNonBackgroundVoxels  =  2
              -> replace canvas voxel walue with conflictLabel
